“Show Me Now Your Way”

In Exodus 33:13, Moses makes a genuine request of God.  He begs God, “Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight…  His request is that God would do what only God can do – show him the correct way.  He knew that by following God’s way he would know God and find grace and favor in His sight.  Let us consider allowing God to show us His way.

We cannot find our own way.  Moses realized, as we should, that we cannot find our own way.  Jeremiah said this, “O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps” (Jeremiah 10:23).  He is stating that it is not within our power or reasoning to know what is the best way for us to live our lives.  We must look to God and see His way and His guidance because great danger is found in not doing so.  This is evidenced when the wise man said, “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12). We need to allow God to show us His way because we are unable to determine the way which is best for our lives.

God has shown His way through His Word.  God is not going to show us His way in some miraculous outpouring or event, or even by speaking directly to us as He did to Moses.  However, God has shown us His way and has used His Word to do so.  Paul said in I Corinthians 14:37, “If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.  When we look into God’s word we find His way.  We need not rely on our own reasoning or the wisdom of men to find the way.  God has expressly told us His way through His Word – the Bible.

We must follow this way.  In order to find the grace and favor Moses sought we too must find and follow God’s way.  How sad it is to see people like the ones Jeremiah spoke of in Jeremiah 6:16.  Jeremiah writes, “Thus says the LORD: “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.”  We must not have the attitude of refusing to walk in God’s way as these did.  Rather, we should seek God’s ways, find them in His Word, and follow them in our lives.
