The Way Leading To Eternal Life
David Eldridge
As Jesus gives His sermon on the mount He says, “Enter by the narrow
gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and
there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the
way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew
It is one in number. So many times we hear
religious folk around us saying that as our religious practices differ we are
all just taking different roads leading to the same place – Heaven. Jesus knew
nothing of the sort. He used the singular “the gate” and “the way”.
There is only one way which leads to life eternal and it is found in strict
obedience to all the Lord commands (cf. Matthew 7:21-23).
It is found by few. Wouldn’t we all like to think
that every seemingly “good” person was going to go to Heaven? But notice as Jesus speaks of the way of life
He says few will find it and the majority will travel the way of destruction.
Once again, we note the few are those who abide in strict faithfulness with all
of God’s commands (cf. Matthew
It is difficult. The way leading unto life is a difficult one to follow, but not impossible. Ease is found in the broad way where you can do whatever you like without thought of eternity. However, the path to Heaven is fraught with self-denial, service to God, and concern for others. This way is not the easiest path in this life, but it is the best for it ends at an eternal home with God.
